Ensuring Quality in Custom Engineering Castings and Forgings

How to align 2D/3D drawings, material grades, non-destructive testing, and sample prototypes before full production runs.

Procuring customized engineering components—such as valve bodies, pump impellers, and transmission gears—requires methodical pre-production planning. A structured validation process prevents costly machining errors and metallurgical non-conformities.

Step 1: CAD Drawing & Metallurgical Grade Alignment Ensure 2D drawings contain complete geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). Specify raw material grades under recognizable global standards (e.g., ASTM A216 WCB for carbon steel castings, or ASTM A351 CF8M for stainless steel).

Step 2: Tooling & First Article Inspection (FAIR) Before authorizing mass production, review a First Article Sample. Validate dimensional accuracy using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) and verify chemical composition using an optical emission spectrometer.

Step 3: Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Protocols Depending on critical pressure ratings or structural loads, specify required NDT methods: - **Liquid Penetrant Testing (DPT/PT):** For surface crack detection. - **Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI):** For sub-surface flaws in ferromagnetic parts. - **Radiographic Testing (RT) / Ultrasonic Testing (UT):** For internal porosity in heavy casting sections. - **Hydrostatic Pressure Testing:** For pressure-retaining valve and pump bodies.
